Thanks for the honest antidote to the current idea that people should just be grateful for any lousy, demeaning, unsustainable job they can find. Until we shine a light on the “job-creators” who make out like bandits by keeping wages low and workers dependent, let’s try once again to support workers in advancing and improving.
Anecdotally, I want to share that when my brother graduated from high school, he was not at all inclined to give college a try. Instead, in June after he graduated, he got a job working 10 hours a day in an actual bomb factory. It was hot, relentless, mindless, filthy, and thankless work — and at the end of the day, he couldn’t even have pride in what he had accomplished.
In September, he started college and finished four years later as an engineer.
Life is a university, yes?
