Thanks for this encouraging word. As I’m sure you know, family systems approaches to change have highlighted the resistance one receives from others at any attempt to change roles in the complicated web of relationships. That’s why it’s remarkable that entirely grown, adult offspring return home for Christmas and find their new experiences and knowledge virtually ignored. You may be a rocket scientist, we say, but to us you are still the one who stuck that pencil up your nose that time.

But as you point out — we can and should gently, firmly, and lovingly insist on writing our own narrative. The others will adapt, or not, but that will be their narrative, not ours.
